PUBLIC CHANNEL [D176, EVENING]

[It's evening, the Ringmaster reconnected one of the islands to the Carnival so never-kidnapped people can go back and forth, and the Prince still has a lot of captives inside that big stone fortress. Captives without cell phones or radios, so there's almost no way for information to get out. But even though the thick stone, things can happen over there that those outside notice pretty quickly. Especially given reason to think about the person in question.

The radio crackles on, then turns off. A full minute passes before he tries again.]

Does... Wait, I need to be mannerly first.

Hello, everyone! Does anybody know much about, well, sudden onset amnesia? Or, cures for it? I think... I'm getting worse.

Huh? The Prince...

[The Ringmaster, hinting that fae could do much worse things than Papyrus had any reason to know about.]

What... are you saying? The, the name I can't remember, all of a sudden... You believe the Prince did that?

H-He takes them..! The lady 'Beneath', she told us..! [she explains, frantic with her words.]

He takes the 'true names'...and sometimes you can earn it back, but mostly he keeps them-and then no name feels right, and nothing feels right, it just hurts..!

[Well, it doesn't HURT, exactly, but it was extremely uncomfortable.] And he took it..!

[He has no idea who the Lady Beneath is, or who this is talking now, but that won't stop him from listening.]

Oh my god, he's done this before? And it's hurting them? It's hurting...

[At least they can be returned, somehow.]

If you take a name, even a new name doesn't work.

...She said we could call her.... ....something, [she decides to note in the end, forcing herself to some illusion of calm,] But just saying it felt wrong..! And her feelings when someone said the name were bad too-not...Really bad, but it was still the kind of hurt that comes when it's not right...!

He has almost all the servants names..! And if you break a rule, any rule, as a servant, or something else, he puts you in the Beneath, and still keeps your name..!

[A new name won't work...? He goes quiet for a moment, imagining various other names applied to his brother. 'John', that's a popular one among carnival workers. But, no... no.

...Even thinking 'Brother,' all capitalized as a form of address, doesn't feel right.]

This is all very alarming!

Even the parts I don't understand. [Which is a larger part than he wants to admit. But, at least, the amount he understands is also increasing as they go... Maybe just one little question will speed it up enough to be worth it.] What, uh... What is the Beneath? You said that before.

Y...yeah. [Granted, she doesn't know what parts he doesn't understand, but....ah.] ...It was...where any of us who were out of our rooms went.

....this is my fault, [the little one says quietly, chewing her lip.] ...The lady that was down there already tried to fight against the Prince-so she was fired from being a butler and sent down there. ...and almost everything else became animal things, after a while.

...while...While we were down there, some changes did happen...but the food also got poisoned, and you couldn't eat it. And....

He hurt a lot. ....more than the others, I think, [she whispers.]

[Becoming animal things doesn't seem so alarming, from that description. He needs only look down at his feet, and the tail dangling just short of the ground. But maybe there's more to it than that, or...

'He hurt, more than the others.']

Oh... That all...

[Just hearing that hurts. But from right here, right now, he can't do anything to stop it. Not past hurts, not present hurts. Running off without a better plan... might just get him, or others, caught.

But there's at least one hurt he can do something about.]

Well... I thank you for your news! And, I'm sure this isn't your fault, [as gently as he can, given how loud his voice tends to be.] The fault in this matter is clear!

The Prince is the one making people visit, and making those strict rules, and, and putting them in that Beneath. There's no need to take credit from him! After all the effort he's gone to, to be so unkind, he deserves all the credit.

....Even though he was trying to help me when he was caught..? [She says it without thinking-and she very clearly regrets it, given the long silence on her end. When she does speak again, it's with a little more strength though-or at least some semblance of it.]

The Prince...

....He makes me think of people at home. ....Bad people, [She mutters.] ...The kind that can't be forgiven.

...the ones that don't change, I guess...

[He hums a wordless agreement at her question, after she goes silent, reading the mood just well enough to stay quiet as she thinks something through. And what she follows up with...]

I'm not sure about 'can't forgive'... [But, just because he can, doesn't mean she has to. He hastily adds in,] But that's not the important thing! The last thing you said, that is.

He isn't changing. Well, not himself, not for the better. He's just... making other people change to be more like him? It's awful.

[Well.] ....Doesn't forgiving mean you're friends after that...

[She has some flawed views of this, it's mostly Yuuya's fault, admittedly-

Anyway.] It's not to be like him.

...It's just to be something he can use. ....that's worse, I think. ...He likes....puppets, I guess.

...like at home.

Hmmm. If forgiveness meant friendship... I would have a lot of friends! Even more than the many I already have.

People are... always doing annoying things, causing interesting problems. Not like puppets. But that's part of the charm of people.

And, uh, it doesn't sound like your home... was much of a home at all?

[A kind of place that warrants multiple comparisons to this whole situation... Papyrus suspects he doesn't want to ask more details. And that, maybe, they wouldn't want to share them.]

Which just makes it all the more imperative... that we get everyone back! And make a better home here. With all the friends we can.

[Reira would, certainly, be willing to share. But for someone willing to listen? On a radio, in this sort of time? It's not the time at all.

And at the least, Reira won't say anything unless they ask.] Yeah. ....Yuuya has lots of friends, [She remarks somewhat idly, before moving on.] ....It wasn't a good place. ...It was a little better with niisama, but... ...I still had to listen to 'mom', after she took me. So even if he didn't like that, it was still a bad place too.

....It's nicer here, [she continues, adding-] ....We definitely have to make it a better home, here.

I see... [Some names and allusions he doesn't know, at least one familiar-sounding... That's never been a thing to stop Papyrus from being agreeable and concerned. He nods the slow, not quite comprehending nod of someone who wants to seem understanding. Then he remembers they're talking on the radio, and his body language is for naught.]

Well! It sounds like it's already an improvement. Is Yuuya here?

Yeah.

[An. Awkward pause.] ........He's why I'm here, sort of.

Oh? Did you make a deal? So many teens are here because they're rule-breaking ruffians... [Well, Rin at least. And he's not here, right now, thanks again to the mentioned rule-breaking.]

...It wasn't to break rules, [She says calmly.]

...He thought he was saving me, so. ....I'm not mad at him about it. ...I'm just here because it meant someone else was going to get hurt, so I'm going to make sure that doesn't happen.

[The polite way to say, 'he asked the Ringmaster to pull out a Very Angry Hate Dragon from her soul' and 'Reira really didn't want the Ringmaster to kill said Angry Hate Dragon'.]

His deal would have gotten someone hurt? As, as a side effect, I'm sure! But oh no! Does that mean yours is just to fix his? That should give you guys a discount or something.

[That's how the Ringmaster works, right?]

Mmmmmh. ...no....

....They did a lot of bad things.

...I just know they wanted to fix those things. ...I felt it.

...so there's no 'discount'. I don't think you can do that?

Well... [He doesn't actually have a reason to lie to this child.] Maybe not. It's always a year, even if broken into pieces.
