[Day 69] Morning - Public Channel

Anybody ever had a dream about dyin'? But it feels so real that it's less like a dream and more like... a memory? An' it's not you dyin', it's somebody else, but yer seein' it like it's you.

[That is so specific Doll. Surely nobody has had this same experience. There's some awkward tense air before she continues.]

Normally I don' dream much, but this was right unsett'lin. Couldn' sleep much after.

[There's a stifled yawn on his end only because he was up late the previous night.]

Can't say I have, little princess. [He's suppose to have memories of his former life, even their deaths, but that memory was broken.] Want to talk about it?

Yeah. [Dang, she hadn't meant to wake Tyki up. But let's be real, she probably woke some people up with all her screeching the night before, so she really doesn't have a leg to stand on here.]

I was freezin' cold, 'n runnin' through a cave. Or a tunnel? More like a tunnel. An' someone came through th'wall 'n told me ta stop lookin' fer somebody. But it was real important, I guess, even though I didn' know who it was who was so important... so I kept on goin'.

[She knows it's alright regardless. His door was always open and welcomed to Doll, even in tents, and she could wake him up at any hour if she needed it.]

A tunnel of ice or just a very cold tunnel? Go on.

Not recently...

[And good thing, too, with all the troubles about dreams lately.]

But I've had something like that. Except, it was slightly opposite. It wasn't me, but it was real, but it felt like a dream.

I didn't feel much like sleeping after that, either.

It... it was ice, yeah. Def'nitely ice. Dunno why I wasn' dressed fer ice, seems a bit foolish now that I think about it.

Anyway. She jus' told me ta 'survive', but I didn' much like that. I wanted ta help. [Apparently she shared that with whoever this was in her dream.] I saw somebody move down a darker tunnel, so instead'a goin' down the lighter, warmer one, I followed the shadowy-figg'r.

It was real? How was it real but like a dream? I don' get it...

Well, you see, it was dreamlike.

[He pauses just long enough for the wording to sink in.]

But mostly! It was happening to someone else. I saw things from their point of view... Things happened, and I couldn't change them. I was just along for the ride.

... [Yeah alright, she'll try to wrap her head around that even though it didn't really answer the question.]

Yeah, sometimes I felt like I was bein'... I dunno, guided t'do somethin'. Or I'd give myself a reason t'do it one way 'stead of another. What happened in your, ah, incident?

[Normally he wouldn't comment on such a personal statement, but he knows from experience how dreams of death can haunt you.]

If it's unusual for you it probably won't happen again.

[Papyrus hums agreement, like something in Doll's description is familiar. Having thoughts and feelings all skew toward what's 'supposed' to be happening... That dream incident and his experiences with mind control have had that in common.]

My incident... Not to dwell on the details too much, but, 'I' picked a fight. And did kind of terribly? It was a good thing it wasn't me doing the fighting, or it might have gone very differently!

But that was ages ago. Completely unrelated to yours, I'm sure.

Dreams don't always make sense but say for a moment they did, it would likely be because one was in a hurry or they didn't expect ice. Then again, men have done more foolish things out of self pride.

[He's not giving advice because he's listening. He wants her to talk it out. To feel better.] Because it was important, or because you felt you had to or wanted to?

...all that. [It's a strange realization.] It felt like... my whole life depended on findin' this person. But I also wanted ta do it. Fer myself and fer her.

And as I followed her, the walls... they were all shadowy too. Like there were... people in 'em. Tryin' ta get out.

...Maybe. I didn't pick a fight, but it went terribly anyway. I was just tryin' ta find somebody. Who were ya fightin'?

I c'n only hope it stays unusual. I don' care ta relive somebody dyin' over 'n over again.

Yeah.

[She is not shy or embarrassed about this.]

It was downright unsettlin', is all. Y'expect ta be you in yer own dreams. Not... intrudin' on somebody's memories.

[Again, he's listening like a good boy. He knows Joker and her haven't been on the best of terms lately because he's a stalker. Except a lot of this sounds out of the ordinary.]

Sounds important. Whoever she was that is. Your whole world, in her case. Is that how you were 'dying' as you put it? Did you die for her?

Seems to be something that's going around. Not the dying part ... just the dreams that feel real.

Uh, well... [He hesitates, then continues not answering the question.] ...Anyway! If you have trouble sleeping again... You could try reading a book! It's a great way to occupy your mind, when disquieted at night.

No... [She shudders, but holds the sound in. Just remembering the images of what happened to her are enough to make her skin crawl.]

I found her, sealed in the ice. I tried so hard ta get her out before she died, but she just... fell apart into ash. I took a moment, grievin' and regrettin' I didn' get there sooner, then I turned 'round an'--

[Doll swallows.]

There was a spear 'a ice through my chest.

That could work... I can' read too good though. Maybe a book without too many words in it!

I don'... I've never seen anythin' like th'person that came through th'wall. All fire, 'n a big axe... I think. I think I was supposed ta look like her? She called me 'spark'.

Yeah? I haven' heard... [She's been a little preoccupied, to say the least.] Who else had a dream like this?
