public channel - D148 - fae jargon 101

If anyone, older member or newer arrival, wants information on... [ oh lord, this is going to take a while. Strange sighs slightly before obviously reading off a list of terms he's written down. ] Arcadia, the Rose Queen, Ignatius, Nightshade, the Count of Crows, Frost, the Summer Court, the Winter Court, how faerie court hierarchies work, the Wyld Fae, or the Beast, then I'll be happy to tell you what I know. I picked up some knowledge from my time in Portland and through conversations with the fae here and, for obvious reasons, don't want to bore all of you with far too many details and speculations at once.

[ There's a pause, partly to catch his friggen breath, before Strange continues talking. ]

I can at least explain Portland, though--for our new arrivals, of course. It's a city where the carnival was recently trapped for a month. Many members had their memories altered and believed they lived in the city for their entire lives. It was a...trying experience.

[ Understatement of the century. Strange sighs, like he's steeling himself for what he's going to say next. ]

Portland had it's own set of fae, some of whom I mentioned in my previous list. Plenty of the carnival members have ill-will towards those fae, who seemed determined to vex us and ruin our lives during that month. And despite the fact that we've left that world, I've a feeling that we'll see those fae again. Now that the Severing's removed, they can travel to different worlds the same way the Ringmaster can. And it wouldn't surprise me if some tried to reclaim what or who they believe they lost.

[ how dramatic! And quite possibly the worst way to end a broadcast as Strange just flips the radio off then and there. He has absolutely no clue how to best END the broadcast so not being cryptic is officially for chumps. ]

I'm afraid you'd have to ask someone else about that. None of the spells I know would be any good for fireproofing.

So, okay, seasonal faeries: is it that those are really broad umbrellas and Summerlands Fae aren't Summer Court, or is is more complicated?

To the best of my knowledge, there are three main types of fae: Summer Fae, Winter Fae, and the Wyld Fae. The Summerlands fae are Summer Fae but aren't part of the Summer Court, who are also Summer Fae.

Right, right. I'm assuming if there's spring or fall ones they aren't a big deal in these spaces.

Wyld fae don't have the same theme?

Wyld fae are more of a collection of odds and ends. They hold no loyalty to either court and aren't fond of the court structures in the first place. The Ringmaster falls into that category.

The Miscellaneous Fae, got it. Am I correct in thinking you're spelling wild with a "y" here?

I believe so? I've heard spoken it more than seen it written down, though one of the fae did attempt to correct my spelling when she looked over my notes.

[ though spelling is the least of Strange's problems wrt penmanship. ]

Do they spell magic with a K, do you think? Add a bunch of Ys into fairy?

Why would someone spell magic with a K in the first place?

Or possibly with a Y, that happens too! MagicK. MagYk.

...honestly I don't know. In my experience it's usually pretentious but, hey, there may be totally valid reasons.

Honestly, it's probably some sort of different worlds, different spellings sort of nonsense, [ said with a siiiiigh. It's obvious from his tone of voice that he's sulking a bit. ] It's amazing how words from my time are spelled differently just in the carnival alone.

[ Strange is from the 1810s, a few words are spelled a LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT than they're spelled in the 2010s. ]

Usually it is! Where I'm from the uh, the other worlds we're in contact with either don't have magic or don't use that word for it, with or without the extreme cool lettering. Or I guess it's possible some of them do, they're just super not friendly enough to share.

Right, right. Timeline wonkery. I wonder how well we'd be able to understand each other if we went over to English.

I'd imagine it would be easier speaking than it is writing--especially since half the time, I write in script!
