public channel - D148 - fae jargon 101

If anyone, older member or newer arrival, wants information on... [ oh lord, this is going to take a while. Strange sighs slightly before obviously reading off a list of terms he's written down. ] Arcadia, the Rose Queen, Ignatius, Nightshade, the Count of Crows, Frost, the Summer Court, the Winter Court, how faerie court hierarchies work, the Wyld Fae, or the Beast, then I'll be happy to tell you what I know. I picked up some knowledge from my time in Portland and through conversations with the fae here and, for obvious reasons, don't want to bore all of you with far too many details and speculations at once.

[ There's a pause, partly to catch his friggen breath, before Strange continues talking. ]

I can at least explain Portland, though--for our new arrivals, of course. It's a city where the carnival was recently trapped for a month. Many members had their memories altered and believed they lived in the city for their entire lives. It was a...trying experience.

[ Understatement of the century. Strange sighs, like he's steeling himself for what he's going to say next. ]

Portland had it's own set of fae, some of whom I mentioned in my previous list. Plenty of the carnival members have ill-will towards those fae, who seemed determined to vex us and ruin our lives during that month. And despite the fact that we've left that world, I've a feeling that we'll see those fae again. Now that the Severing's removed, they can travel to different worlds the same way the Ringmaster can. And it wouldn't surprise me if some tried to reclaim what or who they believe they lost.

[ how dramatic! And quite possibly the worst way to end a broadcast as Strange just flips the radio off then and there. He has absolutely no clue how to best END the broadcast so not being cryptic is officially for chumps. ]

It's a city in America, [ says the very British man. ] It's in a state called 'Oregon', if that helps matters.

I don't know of any 'Oregon'. [Victorian Noble, early 1890s] Ah, right. America. I believe I saw that in the paper somewhere.

Answer me this then, Mister Knowledge. What exactly are we using? At home we at least had a phone to communicate somewhere in the house.

It's based off of a walkie-talkie, I believe. Though as I've no idea what walkie-talkies actually look like, I have no idea how accurate it is. And, as you can probably guess, it works through magic.

It's Jonathan Strange, by the way. Though I suppose I've had worse nicknames than Mister Knowledge!

I have no idea what a walkie-talkie even is. It's nothing I have ever seen. Half the time it doesn't work. [Tyki no. That is all you.] Is there anything in this carnival that doesn't work through magic?

Lor-- Tyki Mikk. Just Tyki Mikk. [He doesn't have to address himself as Lord here.]

I don't think so--isn't that wonderful?

[ Strange has a very different opinion on magic than Tyki. ]

And pleasure to meet you, Mister Mikk. I trust that our collective reluctance to talk about Portland aside, you've been settling in well?

Maybe I'll settle in better than I thought I would in the long run.

[He's starting to get that idea but he already knows who Strange is. Joker told him when he went to check out one of his jobs.]

Well enough. It's not nearly as accommodating as home but I can't complain. Somewhere to eat, sleep and entertain myself is all I really need. Well, besides the occasional machine I haven't seen before.

[ Joker probably gave him a more flattering review than half the carnival would so......sorry in advance, Tyki. ]

I know what you mean. I don't need much in the way of space but I'd at least like a desk. I've had to make do with the kitchen table!

[prazerbutterfly]

[Hmm, let's see. He believes the words were along the lines of never helping him unless he wants the risk of being set on fire.

And careful. He might just steal him a desk or con some poor sap to deliver it to the wrong place before the carnival moves again.]

You poor thing. A kitchen table is not enough space for a mind in need.

[ You set someone on fire ONE TIME (okay so it might have been twice) and then suddenly it's 'oh, don't help Strange, he'll set you on fire.' ]

It isn't, [ Strange just continues. Obviously Tyki is enabling his whining so the bitching and moaning continues! ]

Especially since I have a roommate now. There were a few days when I was living by myself and of course I could leave the table precisely how I wanted it. But now that we're sharing the same space, that simply won't do.

[Tyki is a rather curious fellow and he'd offer his help just to see something different than the usual tinkering of a crazed fool. Also, he's kind of fireproof. Kind of.

He's an enabler on purpose, you know. He's just listening to this man talk.]

I've seen the desk of a brilliant mind. Not nearly enough space given how there are things everywhere in a precise order that shouldn't be touched. I don't need as much space myself as much as I need the right space. I'm not use to having a roommate. People can be so touchy about 'their side'.

[kingsroads]

[ Strange is arrogant enough to think that surely Tyki must be talking about HIM when he mentions the brilliant mind (and also arrogant enough to think he's brilliant in the first place.) So the ranting just continues ]

Precisely! I don't mind having a roommate--one has to get used to these things when one's married. But I do mind someone meddling with my papers or not having enough space for my papers in the first place!

[Oh, he's so going to keep encouraging this throughout his time spent in this carnival. Yet, if Strange could see his face right now Tyki might look amused.]

A trailer doesn't mean marriage but it should at least have compromise, Mister Strange. My roommate seems well established but I have certain needs and I will have them addressed or... other measures will be taken to ensure this. A man should have his space especially if he needs it.

Who is your roommate, out of curiosity?

One Miss Ash Mischief. She's rather lively and while I normally live alone in my own room in the family house I certainly have never bunked with a woman permanently. It's almost scandalous.

Ah, Ash! The two of us are good acquaintances. [ now how to nicely phrase 'you might want to ask the Ringmaster for some earplugs' ]

She's very...musical. That's something I'm sure you'll find out soon if you haven't already.

She's easy to get along with? [Because he can be rather assertive if he has to and if he needs to hide something that won't be a problem.]

Oh, I've had the pleasure of being introduced when she couldn't hear me knocking. I don't often barge into a woman's quarters unannounced but she left me little choice.

I'd say so! We get along perfectly well and I'll be the first to admit that friendship with me can be a little trying.

[ what with the magic and the madness and Strange's everything...though this entire conversation, Tyki's unfailing politeness, it's interesting to Strange in a way that other conversations haven't been. ]

I know this might seem like an odd question, but bear with me. Around what year was it before you signed on with the carnival?

Exact date is unknown but we're told it is 1880s - 1890s

I'm starting to get that impression but I personally can be just as trying. I should get along with her just fine.

[He's right. It's an odd question and yet he feels the odd man out to a lot of people. Mannerisms, dress, even local customs are different just about everywhere.] Alright, I'll bite. 188x. Why?

Oh thank God! [ Strange just can't help but let out a little laugh of relief. ] You're closer to my time than half the carnival is--I'm from 1816.

If I may be blunt, your mannerisms give you away.

[ said the person who wears period attire despite having been in the carnival for the past four or so months. ]

You sound relieved. Perhaps I should be as well. Everything is far different than what I am use to. The time is different here and for others?

[He will be easy to spot given his Victorian Lord outfit he will always wear. Who wears a top hat anymore?!] I'm noticing the lack of mannerisms anywhere.

The time here is different and the times we travel to are different. There's been more than one performance stop where I had no idea how exactly things commonplace to that world actually worked.

[ computers are weird, yo. ]

So one may never know exactly what time period or what applies to it at any given time unless one outright asks. Do you always dispense such ill news, Mister Strange?

[ib4 he blows up a microwave.] How do performances work exactly? Is it the entire time we are at a 'stop' or is there a break in between?

[kingsroads]

I'm afraid there's even more alarming news yet to come.

[ Buuuuut he's going to be a jerk and not mention the whole 'your body changes in weird ways like getting scales or feathers' aspect just yet. c: ]

As for performances, the way that it works is that we'll arrive at a location. The first week is usually spent setting up and exploring the lay of the land while the second week is spent giving a performance for the locals.

Of course, that's the schedule of the performers themselves--I've no idea what the schedule of other departments are. Out of idle curiosity, what role were you assigned?

Now, now. It's unbecoming of a gentleman to tease another gentleman with such information.

[He's teasing, of course, because he does want to know everything even if he would like some things to be a surprise. He was a huge information gatherer for his family but he'll find out eventually anyways.]

And the carnival just moves or is it actually traveled from one place to another?

That'll work for me. I was given the role of Magician. [And Conman but he doesn't need to know that.]

The carnival doesn't necessarily move as you would expect a normal carnival to. We move through the Ringmaster's power. One day we're here, another day we're somewhere else.

[ Though as Tyki mentions he'll be a magician, Strange's tone just brightens. ]

Then it seems that we'll be coworkers! I work as a magician also. [ and also a mercenary but they're not talking about that right now, let's just focus on the fun coworkers bit. ]
