[Day 60, Afternoon]

[ By the time the radio turns on it’s about an hour after Lambert’s group has returned and reported their findings to the Ringmaster. Now it’s just a matter of letting everyone else know. It’s Syrlya who speaks first. ]

As most of you are aware, the Summer and Winter Courts have pursued the carnival into the Athenaeum and taken some of our people hostage.

[ “Hostage" is a nice way to say permanent enslavement.] According to the Scribe and Curator, the lifelike and antagonistic nature of the books found here is the library’s defense against intruders, and it is under our control.

And has been under our control this entire time. [Tyki’s voice chimes in, at this point. To which he’s not bitter at all about it. This entire mess could’ve possibly been avoided.] Our will has been controlling the stories to a certain victory each time we have been swallowed up by one. It should be comforting to know that they cannot use the stories against us. They have not been given these defenses.

If we cast the Fae into our own narrative, the magic should be strong enough to combat them. We will be bound to the same story, so we cannot allow them to turn its favor or-- [And this he sounds less certain about.] --break the confines of the story ourselves.

It should be noted as well that the story cannot be entirely unbelievable. To play the part, it must seem plausible. One cannot just snap their fingers and a fae is weakened, for example. Something like that will allow them to break the story. The narrative must be consistent and convincing.

[ The Nightrider finally speaks. There’s an edge of tension to his voice, but otherwise, he’s pretty composed. ]

The good news is, this means you don't have to be a fighter to help. Bad news is, we still have to figure out how we're going to do it, who's going or staying, and if we're dealing with the Courts together or one at at time. We need to come up with something fast -- I don’t want them to give time to figure out their own plans. Catching them by surprise is the best chance we’ve got, so working together in groups makes the most sense.

If you have any useful ideas, now’s the time to share them.

[ And 9S chimes in: ] If anyone wants to hear the exact exchange we had with the Scribe and Curator, I can provide a recording for your viewing.

I said useful ideas.

[ ooc: this is mainly an ic planning post! ooc plotting post to follow to organize things more formally, but feel free to threadjack each other, form up groups of your own, all that good stuff to work out where your character will be. ]

[His cat ears perk up.]

Really?

[He's seen bits and pieces of Childermass' magic before, but never really experienced it for himself.]

I'll be fine with the shadows, so let's go with that.

[Says he who has never been dumped in the shadows before.]

Very well. [ Childermass will hold a hand out to 9S as if expecting him to take it. Which, actually, he is. ] Hang onto your robot, will you?

[ Enjoy the life choice you just made, 9S. It's not the worst one out there but, provided he does as he's told, as soon as he has the android and the android has his faithful Pod, the magician will use the shadow of the table they're at to plunge all three into absolute darkness. Save for whatever light 9S and Pod give off, that is.

It'll feel very briefly like falling, then suddenly a surface to stand (or fall) on.

[9S only makes good life choices.

Obediently taking Childermass' hand, he holds out his other hand for Pod 153 to hang onto. Though he was prepared for something, 9S still lets out a yelp of surprise when he feels like he's falling.

Fortunately, he doesn't fall flat on his face, though he does stumble forward a step or two. Pod 153's light is the only light source, it seems. 9S takes the opportunity to look around, instinctively scanning as well.]

Huh. I can't detect any of the Carnival at all while in here.

[He starts walking, just to see how far he can go.]

It's awfully quiet in here, too. I guess there's no ambient noise like there is everywhere else.

[Sorry, were they here for a reason?]

[ They were here for a reason and Childermass reminds 9S of such, clearing his throat and speaking up to say, ]

9S. The recording?

[ Though there's really no end to the shadowy space they're in. There's a good chance 9S could walk forever and find nothing, just endless black. Childermass just hopes he has the sense to turn around once he doesn't immediately hit a wall. ]

[9S would go further, but he gets bored easily, and when he hears Childermass' reminder---]

Oh! [Whoops!] Right away. Pod? Play the video from memory unit SC_8035.

< Affirmative. Initiating playback from memory unit SC_8035 >

[Although Lambert had told 9S to record the conversation, 9S had already set aside specific memory for their meeting with the Scribe and Curator from the very beginning. And so Pod 153 projects the memory onto a small, hard-light screen, sound emitted through its speakers.]

[ And so Childermass stands by and watches the scene play out, intent on what's being said right up until the Scribe becomes-- ]

Ah.

[ Yes, that part. The Scribe takes shape and it's as Lambert, of the far too familiar Portland variety, holding aloft a mighty flaming sword. It's at that point the magician steps closer, holding a hand up to the projected screen. He won't quite go far enough to touch it, though, pausing at the last second and stepping back.

And the focus changes, moving on.
]

I never knew the part about the flaming sword. [ As if that's important at all. In the long run, it isn't, aside from demonstrating the library's power. ] That must have upset Lambert.

[ Considering he's sputtering angrily in the background of the recording, yeah, that's an easy assumption to make. ]

Oh yeah, totally.

[9S' barely contained snort of laughter is definitely playing from Pod 153's speakers.]

Aren't humans supposed to be strong because of the power of love or something? I don't understand why he's so upset about it.

[Rita also doesn't like showing that she cares in front of other people, which he still doesn't understand. Nevertheless, he respects that and doesn't push. And he still remembers Jackass' research conclusions... about how androids are able to keep on fighting the war because of the feeling of 'love' generated in androids' neural receptors during combat.

9S brings his hand to his chin, foot tapping on the floor.]

I wonder who the loved one the Scribe was talking about was.

[personal profile] atouts 2018-06-08 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
A mystery for the ages, I suppose...

[ It isn't but Childermass isn't planning on telling 9S. ]

And I suspect you'd meet plenty of humans less inclined to agree with love being key to our strength. Some might call it a weakness instead.
dressedtothe: (these lips don't lie)

[personal profile] dressedtothe 2018-06-09 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Is Childermass one of those people...?]

Why would it be a weakness? The human emotion of love is what allows you to fight longer and harder than you otherwise would.

[That seems to be the general consensus, anyway. The power of love, and androids' imitation of it.]
atouts: (006; l'amoureux)

[personal profile] atouts 2018-06-10 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Yet another mystery, 9S, but... probably not. Even if he is such a stoic fellow. ]

Mostly because they think it too sentimental, something better left to women. It doesn't mean they are correct, mind you, just that they hold other ideals higher.
dressedtothe: (here come the calvary)

[personal profile] dressedtothe 2018-06-12 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Huh...]

Why would that make it something left to women?

[??? Humans are so weird. Completely forgetting about the video running in the background, 9S continues to pester Childermass.]

What other ideals would be more important?

Generally, the people who say that have never been menaced by a lady with a pistol. [ Which probably still doesn't mean a lot to 9S, so... ] Which is to say they think they're weak.

[ Therefore, full of weak emotions, etc. Anyway, he's still trying to watch the video, but 9S asks yet another question. ]

Hm? Oh, I don't know. Bravery, piousness, and how many skirts they can joke about lifting at the end of the week. Something like that.
dressedtothe: (aw man the fridge is running)

[personal profile] dressedtothe 2018-06-17 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ohhh... Wow that sounds stupid. 2B could probably snap his neck with her legs if she so desired.]

Er. What do you mean by, 'how many skirts they can lift'?

[Childermass please explain.]

Ask the Nightrider.

[ Childermass isn't going to cover the birds and the bees for an android. That is outside of his job title. He waves towards the projection instead. ]

Basically, the Scribe wants us to use our imagination against the High Fae?
dressedtothe: (yeah yeah)

[personal profile] dressedtothe 2018-06-18 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
["Ask the Nightrider"? Goddamn it, it's about sex, isn't it? It always is when people try to avoid answering the question.

But that's quickly derailed.]

Oh, yeah. That about sums it up. It sounds stupid [at least, to him] but it's the best we have right now.
atouts: (008; la justice)

[personal profile] atouts 2018-06-21 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
[ It 100% has to do with sex. Sorry, 9S. ]

Then it'll have to do. Maybe everyone can just imagine up fae-devouring holes in the ground and just leave them there...

[ Doubtful, though he's being sarcastic about that part anyway. ]
