Hey, uh… I know this isn’t the best timing for this, but it’s not like there’s such thing as good timing in this case. So, just so everyone knows, it seems like we’ve got a mushi infestation in the carnival.

I know we have a lot of new faces around, so for those that don’t know, mushi are small creatures from mine and Ginko’s homeworld that will sometimes drift through. Most of them are fairly harmless, but a few colonies of what we call Un seem to have drifted in.

Basically, if you notice sound seeming dampened or something in your trailer or part of the carnival, come let Tanyuu or me know and we can deal with it. ...Or if you’re just having trouble hearing in general, for that matter. Zecora will know what to do, too, if you’d rather go to her.

[But honestly Zecora is overworked enough lately and he’d rather not add more to her plate, okay.]

Ok, so how do you get rid of 'em, man? Pretty sure this is going to get thrown on my desk sooner rather than later.

It's not too hard. They should go away if you just toss some saltwater on them; they don't much like it.

[Um. Ginko.]

Saltwater... Ok. Uh.

[There's a long pause. He is totally incredulous.]

...Whuh??

...What? That's how it--

[--Oooooh wait.]

--Huh. Right.

...Well, they're still around, in any case. Maybe they're being protected just like us.

[Which is KIND OF INCONVENIENT.]

So... you figure we just need to make them even more salty?

[This makes no sense, Ginko.]

...Just try it. Tanyuu and I can mix up a mushi purge in case it doesn't work.

Ooh, what's that?

[Now he's just laughing because this is stupid, but hey, he's getting the salt.]

Pretty much what it sounds like; it's a mix of herbs and minerals meant to drive mushi away. With any luck it should work on the Un if the salt doesn't.

Huh. So why don't you just use that on everything?

[Genuine question. He discerns what details he can about their practice when it's practical.]

Doesn't work on some of them. And in the case of Un, we'd rather not waste the supplies if just salt might work.

Fair enough. I'll just take a look around and apply extra seasoning as needed, then.

The salt is working and everything but I think one of the little snail guys just fell in my mouth??

Into your mouth? How did it manage that?

It didn't give me the play by play, but as far as I can tell it tried ta go into my ear canal only to find out it didn't exist.

It's all just kinda one big empty space in here.

No, I would imagine it's hard for them to find the right organ to hide inside with you. Is it still hiding in there?

Suffice to say, it picked the wrong one, because I get the impression I swallowed it.

When monsters swallow stuff it just kinda turns into energy, so...?

Alright, well-- that might be a problem? Or not, I've never heard of someone swallowing an Un before now. How do you feel?

Most people probably don't have the digestive chops to make it happen.

But I don't know what sound normally sounds like underwater, what if we just think it sounds weird but it's cause of the water making things all weird and then you waste your time coming and it's only the water?

[Obviously this is a very important question.]

It won't be a waste. We don't mind being called over in cases like this--honestly it's much better to be safe than sorry. Neither of us will be annoyed at all, this sort of thing was our jobs at home.

Well... Okay. It just sounds like a lot of work, swimming around to everyone's trailers if they don't know! Then you won't get a chance to go and explore everything, too.

We'll have plenty of chance, don't worry. Would you like me to come over right now? I might even be able to point some other kinds of mushi out to you as well, if you can see them.

Oh, yeah, that would be neat! I have to tell Lauren though and make sure he's okay with it. He's shy.

Of course. We're in trailer number thirteen--I'll be waiting nearby, so come and get me if Lauren doesn't mind a guest coming over.

It might help to let us know what these Un actually look like.

Well, not everyone is going to be able to see them. But in case you can, they look like snails with pale green shells. They usually cluster together, too.

So you want us to keep a look out for snails, while in the sea, that may or may not be invisible.

No, I want you to listen and pay attention to if you're having trouble hearing. You were the one who wanted to know what they look like.

[He's doing his best okay]

Because they do something related to sound. Yes, I got that part, but why wouldn't everyone be able to see them?

Because of their nature. The thing is, mushi like Un aren't structured the same way most forms of life are - their bodies are made up primarily of life force itself, with relatively little actual matter. As a result, most people can't see them clearly, and some can't see them at all.

[The way he talks about this lies somewhere between a rehearsed speech that he's given a million times and a planned presentation that he's genuinely excited about. He loves talking about this stuff, okay.]

[ And Childermass is curious, so Ginko's free to talk about this all day if he cares to. ]

So they're energy. [ A form of it, anyway. ] That does make more sense if there's just nothing physical to see at all. You mentioned there are other mushi around, though. Is there much difference between them and these Un?

Depends on what you mean by that. They're structured similarly, as far as being made mostly of life force, but the ways they function beyond that are very different.

I suppose the broadest and most important difference would be that those 'floaters' are typically too weak to have much effect on humans.

And, ah, what do these 'floaters' look like? Different from the Un, I take it?

Different, yes, but that's a difficult question to answer beyond that. Mushi can look like just about anything - animals, plants, or like something else entirely - but if you've seen something glowing and sort of translucent drifting around the carnival, it could be one of them.

[ There's a brief pause as he considers the description, then, ]

I suppose that explains a few things I've seen around. I had assumed they were just a regular part of the carnival.

So you can see them, then? [Always good to know who around here can.]

Yeah, for all I know some of those could have been here already - but at this point there are pretty much always a few mushi around.

It would seem so.

[ Although he sure sounds like he hasn't yet decided if that's a good thing or a terrible thing yet. Being sensitive to otherworldly crap has rarely ever been fun. ]

And they're from your world... Isn't that strange? Assuming they weren't here before, but manage to show up regardless?

I guess so. But apparently mushi aren't bound to their own world the way most beings are - which isn't too much of a surprise, I guess. From what I know, they just don't usually end up in other worlds because they don't have any reason to.

But if they're tagging along with the carnival, is there even anything to stop them from spreading to other worlds? If they ever do choose to? You say there's an infestation and we've taken it right into the middle of a city.

Fortunately, they have yet to spread outside the carnival. I guess, theoretically, the could leave if someone who was infested left... but I'm not sure how long they would last, anyway. As it is, I doubt that individual mushi even stay in the carnival for very long, since there's no light vein here.

A light vein? Is that something they need to survive?

[ This is just going to lead to more questions, he knows it. ]

It's... complicated, but let's say yes. Light veins and their interactions with mushi are difficult to research, given their nature. But mushi do seem to depend on them.

[Of course, where Ginko is from, everything depended on light veins to survive, so that was a pretty alarming difference to get used to.]

So a power source. [ Probably, but that said— ] I get the feeling this is something we could be stuck discussing all day and then some, isn't it?

[ If it's anything like how he could go on and on about magic and all their related book references, well, more like weeks and weeks than days. ]

Something like that. A power source for living organisms.

[He gives a quiet laugh.] Probably, yeah. If you'd rather not clog up the radio, I'd be glad to tell you more another time.
