[ Now that a day's gone by with nobody trying to put a hit on the Ringmaster, it's the PERFECT time to ask his creepy questions. ]

How many of you have died before, whether on your world or at the Carnival? You don't have to answer if you don't want to, I understand this might be a sore subject for some.

And if you have died, how were you brought back to life? Please try to be as detailed in your answer as possible.

[ just asked like no big deal, there's nothing weird about asking how people died in the slightest. c: ]

That may be true. And I doubt the Ringmaster would dismiss someone so easily. Still, a year and a day isn't long in the grand scheme of things.

You say that now, but we both know patience isn't exactly your strong suit.

[ There's a little noise of annoyance because HE KNOWS THAT, OKAY? ]

It's just a year. I can easily survive a year.

[atouts]

Assuming we do end up back in our England and assuming you do find a spell that works, she might disagree.

[ Steal enough letters from the Strange household and you really get a sense for that, whether you want to or not. ]

[kingsroads]

[ how would he know that? It's not like Childermass and Arabella had a lot of contact. Or, at least, a lot of contact that Strange knew of...and then a totally obvious answer comes to his head. ]

You must have talked when I was in the peninsula.

[atouts]

[ too bad he can't just shrug over these damn things... since he can't, he settles on just saying, ]

Only in passing.

[ which is a complete lie, but he'd like to see anyone prove it. ]

[ ha ha, Childermass has to talk to people. ]

Still, the fact that we're talking about this means that it likely won't happen. After all, I've a feeling the Ringmaster enjoys surprising us on our destinations.

[ and then, almost as an afterthought like it's no big deal, Strange adds, ]

Oh, I forgot to tell you--my eyes changed. They're mirrored now. Don't ask me how I can see out of them, for I've no idea.

[atouts]

[ well, there's an unexpected tangent if he's ever heard one ]

Mirrored? Mirrored how?

[kingsroads]

[ look, this is him being considerate and telling Childermass not to worry about his brand new freaky eyes. ]

Obviously they're mirrored like mirrors. They feel like glass as well.

[ he straight up poked his eyeball a few times this morning. ]

I don't know if it is a covering or if the entire eye structure has changed.

[atouts]

[ there's a lengthy radio silence from Childermass as he tries to imagine that. that's... creepy.

finally, he replies, ]

I suppose that's what you get for running in and out of mirrors so often.

It is far too appropriate, don't you think? Much like your feathers.

[atouts]

They aren't quite that appropriate...

[ they really are, though. ]

Haven't we had this conversation already? They're more appropriate than you realize!

[atouts]

And I still think the carnival's magic thinks itself hilarious.

[ which doesn't mean the two aren't mutual, it just means he doesn't want to admit they are. ]

Well the Ringmaster does have a unique sense of humor.

[ unique's putting it a bit nicely... ] Perhaps the magic mirrors the owner?

[atouts]

That could very well be true.

[ even their own magic is a little like themselves, isn't it? ]

[ John Childermass with his shadowy magic and his standoffish self and Jonathan Strange with his showoffy magic and his supremely showoffy self. ]

I'll have to ask the Ringmaster more about that when we inevitably have another conversation. I'm sure she'll answer.

[atouts]

Talk to her often, do you?

[ Should he be worried or...? ]

[kingsroads]

I wouldn't say often but we've had a few conversations by now.

[atouts]

About magic?

[ He's guessing, but let's be real, it's a pretty easy guess to make. ]

[kingsroads]

And our role in the Carnival. It's interesting just how...not necessarily under her control, but how easy it is for her to help change us.

[atouts]

I doubt anyone would care for the additional help with that... Although, it's still difficult to believe that anything can be so out of her control in her own domain.

[ dangerous sigils aside and all. ]

I assume that even faeries can get distracted and out of their depth even in their own realm.
