Hey, I know this is a kind of weird thing to say, but to all you newbies without common sense out there: Do not warn visitors about getting indebted to the carnival. I don't want to see anyone getting in trouble their first week, especially not anyone on my team. Got it?

And now you have a whole year to correct it!

[Which isn't what he meant but she doesn't care.]

[ There's a pause. She's missing the point on purpose. Getting upset won't do anything. ]

Look... I get it. You can at least understand that people don't want to be stolen from. That's all any of this is.

[She pauses too. Huh?]

How do you mean?

[She doesn't really understand the connection, which is different than pretending not to understand it.]

It... breaking a rule you didn't know existed, and getting punished for a mistake you didn't mean to make... knowing people won't warn you, and are just waiting to punish instead of helping... it can feel like being cheated. Like time, and effort, and freedom is getting stolen.

Oh.

[She's quiet for a moment after that, and then speaks again, as if brushing it off.]

Well, to punish you has never been my intention, if that changes your perception of things at all. If I wanted to do that I certainly wouldn't invite you to work at the carnival that I hold so dear.

And really, I offer you more freedom here than most would be allowed in their entire lives.

...Maybe so.

I just hope you can understand why this kind of thing upsets people. You want to look after what's important to you. People can appreciate that. Being open about it will earn a lot more trust in the long run.

I'm open about everything! I shouldn't think it'd be necessary to TELL people not to steal or break my belongings in order for them to know not to do it. I am well aware of standard human morality and I know that is the case.

Everything I do is for this carnival! Honestly, I'm insulted.

There are kids here. It's harder for some to grasp at that age.

If you feel people should already know it's wrong, then why is telling them the consequences wrong? [ At this point, he's as much trying to understand her reasoning as getting her to understand his. ]

Because their carelessness is to my benefit.

Also, it didn't seem like your son had any issues that way...

[SNIPED.]
fragileandsoft: (maybe it's supposed to look like that)

[ ???? Thanks for the compliment???? ] Yeah, he's pretty great.

Seeing ignorance as an advantage is exactly what lead you to this conversation. If people understood from the get-go, you wouldn't have to keep dealing with people like this, upset and confused.
