Months ago, during the Celebration, a few of us got together to talk about and compare the magic from our worlds. Well, it's been a while since then and we've certainly picked up more magicians, so why not revive that little discussion group?

[ he's phrasing it as a hypothetical but as Strange keeps barging on, there's nothing hypothetical about it: he is totally reviving that discussion group. ]

I've asked around and the smaller festival hall in the building closest to the carnival portal is available for our use. Anyone who's interested should meet there tonight, just after sundown, for an informal gathering to talk about magic. There will be space inside the festival hall and outside in the snow for anyone to demonstrate their techniques.

Likewise, anyone who wishes to learn about magic should come and visit as well. [ And there's a bit of a pause like Strange is trying his hardest to choose his words carefully. ] Magicians in the carnival have different types of magic drawing upon different techniques. While one school of thought might seem incomprehensible, another might seem as clear as day. This is a chance for those of us with magic to learn from each other and develop our skills and those of us who wish to learn magic to see what practice would best fit their needs.

[ There's a pause, because Strange has no idea how to end this. ] Sound off if you're coming, I suppose. Oh, and can someone bring snacks?

And I've heard more of it from Vinculus than I ever did from Mr. Norrell. Not that it matters much anymore. It's all come to pass and the book's words have changed entirely.

Magic is tied to the land itself. English magic is as much a part of our heritage as the rocks, trees, and rivers.

...Wait. I thought necromancy is what Foster does? Where they're only mostly alive? [Is Gongenzaka actually a very lively zombie?]

And magic is just a part of Thedas, although tied to a person and not the land. ( a pause, as she considers this. ) Has it caused any natural calamity?

( because she's happy to blame the blight for people's poor opinions of mages, really. )

Not to my knowledge? Odd events surely, but nothing like floods or storms. But again, magic has only just returned after hundreds of years an absence.

No, they're dead at the start of necromancy. Necromancy is bringing the dead back to life.

[ said in a very sort of 'isn't this obvious???' tone ]

Mm. Most of Thedas is told of a time when shemlen used magic to break natural law, and brought about a Blight to the land. One could presume it set the tone for magic and how welcome it is from that point on.

What exactly did this 'blight' consist of?

It is a reoccurring event where something we call Darkspawn rises to the surface in an attempt to eradicate all life. It's not as simple as that sounds, of course, but that's the gist of it.

[periphrasing]

Oh! Does this mean I'll finally get to try out a spell??

[An eager request. She means of the variety of magic that she's been trying learn from him, of course, not her fire or transformation spells.]

[A lot of those things sound. Incredibly organic.

Just making a rudimentary stomach to put things in isn't going to cut it this time around, it sounds like. Gonna have to go the whole hog.]

So I'll just have to use one of my transformation spells before I try it. Alright. Fine. [She's pretty much resigned to this now.] Do you think I should use the chiropterid or the draconid form?

And what's a Darkspawn?

But what about zombies??? And those gross dead ambling skeletons?

First one. [ Lambert says without hesitation. Less chance of things getting accidentally set on fire, for one, and it'll be easier to subdue her in case she turns out to be a bit of the drunk that gets in trouble. ]

I don't know if a dragon can get drunk, but bats definitely can.

[ Lambert has the grace to sound slightly embarrassed, and also kind of stilted, like he's describing he isn't familiar with. Which is, well, true enough, even if it wasn't true back in Portland. ]

Certainly! [ oh man he hopes this spell works ] You've got the gist of the theory now, I'd imagine, might as well give it a shot.

[No internet at the carnival, which must mean Lambert remembers something Portland related that she doesn't. Hmm.]

Actually, never mind. I actually don't want to know.

I'm not so sure about the skeletons but I think zombies also count as necromancy.

Creatures twisted by the taint they carry, and spread it to others. They are driven by a singleminded purpose; the end result would be the death or corruption of all of Thedas. A Blight is when they corrupt one of the Old Gods, and emerge from underground in massive numbers. The last Blight was only ten years ago, and rather unusually short -- most times they last for at least a decade.

( but dalish wardens Get Shit Done, obviously )

Undead isn't alive, except... grammatically.

I can't possibly imagine why someone would want to pass up on a world with them in it.

Well I hate to be rude, but you're a skeleton. And you're certainly not undead. Ergo, I'm not so sure about the skeletons.
