Months ago, during the Celebration, a few of us got together to talk about and compare the magic from our worlds. Well, it's been a while since then and we've certainly picked up more magicians, so why not revive that little discussion group?

[ he's phrasing it as a hypothetical but as Strange keeps barging on, there's nothing hypothetical about it: he is totally reviving that discussion group. ]

I've asked around and the smaller festival hall in the building closest to the carnival portal is available for our use. Anyone who's interested should meet there tonight, just after sundown, for an informal gathering to talk about magic. There will be space inside the festival hall and outside in the snow for anyone to demonstrate their techniques.

Likewise, anyone who wishes to learn about magic should come and visit as well. [ And there's a bit of a pause like Strange is trying his hardest to choose his words carefully. ] Magicians in the carnival have different types of magic drawing upon different techniques. While one school of thought might seem incomprehensible, another might seem as clear as day. This is a chance for those of us with magic to learn from each other and develop our skills and those of us who wish to learn magic to see what practice would best fit their needs.

[ There's a pause, because Strange has no idea how to end this. ] Sound off if you're coming, I suppose. Oh, and can someone bring snacks?

( ooc: this is an ic post about mage club, an idea floated around on the cr meme a while back. I'll put up a mingle log later in the week for the actual meeting itself. as for this post, feel free to threadjack around! )

I'm not certain whether that means you have too much faith in Josephine or too much faith in me.

She made sure Orlesians didn't throw me out of a very fancy party; they're not very fond of elves on a good day, let alone one in any position of power. My faith in her isn't misplaced.

I think the problem there is I need to be invited to a very fancy party in the first place. Due to various complications in my world, I doubt that will happen any time soon.

Not made many friends in high places?

On the contrary, I have plenty. But a few of my actions back home have most likely made me persona non grata at any sort of fancy event.

I made myself mad. Temporarily, of course.

How does one make oneself 'temporarily' mad, if I can ask?

[ who's ready for Lavellan's good opinion of Strange to be AMAZINGLY TANKED. Because all this is just said in a tone of voice that's pure "no big! going bonkers happens to the best of us!" ]

A tincture of madness administered in small doses. The effects were temporary for the most part, but amazingly potent.

Was there a point to doing so, or did you just decide one day that you'd like to experience madness?

( says the person who totally drank from a very questionable well )

Obviously there was a point. There were certain magics that I wished to cast that could only be done so while mad.

[ great life choices from both ends. ]

I can't imagine you would have been in any state of mind to cast them. Are you sure it wasn't simply a trick, left by you 'magicians' of old?

[kingsroads]

Of course it wasn't a trick: it worked. And, the knowledge I learned from it helped me to break the mirrors and restore magic.

[ There's a little teasing tone in Strange's voice as he continues. ] Perhaps that's what's needed to tear down your Veil.

[ because OBVIOUSLY she'd want the veil to be torn down, magic's awesome and wonderful and anything blocking it from it's full potential sucks and Strange hasn't really gotten that 'surprise it'll fuck up your world' memo yet. ]

[dirthena]

Whatever Thedas needs, the removal of the Veil is not it. And therefore going mad is out of the question.

( the sharpness of her voice might take Strange by surprise, as perhaps the conviction behind it. that is not what is needed, and she's certainly not going to let Solas make himself any more insane in order to do so. )

[ well. that's unexpected. ]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Veil what's keeping the magic of your world from reaching it's full potential?

[dirthena]

Yes. And it is also keeping a world that the majority has no experience, no idea how to handle, at bay. Even if humans can live in a world without the Veil -- and that is an if, considering how poorly they can handle the world where it's thin -- you would be gifting magic to a population that is untrained and fearful of it. The unsuspecting could harm themselves, others; there would be countless cases of possession, and spirits would find themselves twisted beyond recognition.

( so. bad news, mostly? sorry her world doesn't work like yours, strange. )

[ who has two thumbs and gifted magic to a population that was untrained: this guuuuuuuy. ]

Spirits? In my world, it was the fae people worried about, not spirits. Do you mean ghosts or something more metaphorical?

[dirthena]

( strange, no. )

Not ghosts. Spirits are -- they embody something. Compassion or Command; Wisdom or Knowledge. But they are malleable, and easily corrupted and changed into demons.

( normally she'd suggest that he just talk to cole, but. )

In my world, the only talk of demons is from preachers trying to scare the faithful into behaving.

[ firey pits of hell and all that. ]

I can think of a few people who would benefit from a chat with a Spirit of Knowledge1

Oh, make no mistake, those in the Chantry do the same. But I suppose they're more successful at it than yours, considering they're real.

( literal demons are way more effective. the church of england could take notes! )

As can I. If you would like to know more, there's another from my world who may be able to provide more insight into the world of spirits from a magical perspective.

I assume the Chantry is an organized religion sort of thing?

I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

( it's the quickest way into solas's good graces, after all. and that might not work now as it did then, but she'll still promote it. )

For the shemlen-- the humans, yes. Most of them.

Then I suppose my world got off lucky. Politicians and generals have opinions on magic, but the church has been wonderfully silent.

[dirthena]

Is it not tied to religion as it is in Thedas? The shemlen always parrot their prophetess: "magic must serve man, not the other way around" or however it goes.

Magic is tied to the land itself. English magic is as much a part of our heritage as the rocks, trees, and rivers.
