This is…Herbert West: a contributor to the recent cure as you may recall as well as…your new Doctor. [He pauses to let that sink in, sounding really smug about it.] The Medical Team is still, small but as more experienced members join it has become more…evident that we do not have the resources we need to properly, treat the Carnival staff.

Namely: up to date medical documentation on you all—now, I made do before with what I had, during the process of constructing the cure but those involved may recall being asked various questions, questions which would have been unnecessary had the previous department been keeping your notes on file. Perhaps medical files aren’t required by, magical zebras but they are required by. Me. It is considerably easier for everyone when all previous knowledge doesn’t leave with the former physician—I’m sure you can agree. [He’s trying his best to sound congenial, definitely, but it mostly comes off as stilted as usual…maybe it counts that he’s trying?]

Today and tomorrow, myself and Mr Okumura will be available to perform physical examinations; any additional medical history you can provide is, welcome, and if you would prefer to attend on an alternate date, contact me to arrange a time.

[And then because so many people here are damned word weasels:] I have to insist all of you show up. Even if you’re healthy. Especially, if you’re healthy to give us an idea of your baseline state but we will, of course, treat any issues you have. Understand, it’s for the good of the Carnival and everyone’s…future well-being.

Of course not. Providing members of the Carnival staff with basic first aid training would benefit us all, so the offer is open to anyone at any time. [He says, polite as always, a smile and a wall.]

As you mentioned, the current medical staff is limited in a way that may make some members of the Carnival uncomfortable, and if you ever wanted to assist, we would appreciate it even if you were only available in a volunteer capacity.

[Listening to this kid make his pitch is making her a little nostalgic. And a little annoyed. Everyone has an angle, everyone has an ulterior motive... that's how it goes in the world of adults, honestly. Everyone's selfish goals... a ha. She didn't really miss this.]

[Yukio has the dubious fortune of hearing Mari actually say スピンドクターくん.]

[There's a pause, long enough that it might be obvious she struck a nerve that Yukio wasn't prepared to deal with but not so long that she might think he gave up.

His own person? Please, he's never had that opportunity. That chance was gone long before he was even convinced. There's always an ulterior motive, there's always a puppet master openly manipulating the game board. Yukio was born into a world of adults.]

Right now, the Carnival has enough children. [Yukio has a temper, and his voice carries at least some of the annoyance he feels. When the hell has he ever had the luxury of growing up slowly? That was something reserved for his brother.]

[He speaks smoother now, quicker.] Shall I be more direct?--it would be easier if you helped, if everyone helped, but I don't require it. I'd prefer to do this the easy way, as would Mr Okumura, but it's not necessary. You'll need us eventually, one way or another, and I'd think you'd prefer us at our most effective rather than artificially shackled by a lack of information.

[Herbert would have been able to see Yukio's reaction, the flash of anger in his expression, the shifting of his grip on the radio before a response that managed to be more calm than he clearly feels.

And Herbert's response means Yukio's attention shifts to him when the boy's still snapping from the radio conversation.]

If you're going to be making public threats, leave my name out of them.

Ohh...it wasn't a threat. Merely the truth of the situation, as Mari was looking for.

[Mari responds before Yukio can say anything to Herbert about how flimsy that excuse was, but his expression carries the disapproving meaning well enough.]

[Yukio's flash of temper slides back under, leaving just a sharp edged smile.]

No, but achieving your cooperation would make up for some of the Carnival's shortcomings.

[And look, he'll even address that question.]

I entered into a contract in order to acquire something of personal importance that would have been impossible otherwise.
