Months ago, during the Celebration, a few of us got together to talk about and compare the magic from our worlds. Well, it's been a while since then and we've certainly picked up more magicians, so why not revive that little discussion group?

[ he's phrasing it as a hypothetical but as Strange keeps barging on, there's nothing hypothetical about it: he is totally reviving that discussion group. ]

I've asked around and the smaller festival hall in the building closest to the carnival portal is available for our use. Anyone who's interested should meet there tonight, just after sundown, for an informal gathering to talk about magic. There will be space inside the festival hall and outside in the snow for anyone to demonstrate their techniques.

Likewise, anyone who wishes to learn about magic should come and visit as well. [ And there's a bit of a pause like Strange is trying his hardest to choose his words carefully. ] Magicians in the carnival have different types of magic drawing upon different techniques. While one school of thought might seem incomprehensible, another might seem as clear as day. This is a chance for those of us with magic to learn from each other and develop our skills and those of us who wish to learn magic to see what practice would best fit their needs.

[ There's a pause, because Strange has no idea how to end this. ] Sound off if you're coming, I suppose. Oh, and can someone bring snacks?

( ooc: this is an ic post about mage club, an idea floated around on the cr meme a while back. I'll put up a mingle log later in the week for the actual meeting itself. as for this post, feel free to threadjack around! )

Looking for magicians sounds like you're wanting people who just know how to create tricks, not cast magic. ( 'mages' sounds so much better. ) But I'll be there, if you're looking for new members.

What term would you prefer I use? Mages? Wizards? There's so many different ways to describe magic users—I simply use 'magician' because it is what we were called back in my world.

[ Strange is very cavalier about this. After all, it doesn't matter what they're called, just that they're people who can do magic. ]

And this isn't an organization or a codified group or anything like that. I've never been one for rules. [ the word 'rules' is said like most people would say 'roadkill' ] Anyone who wishes to learn about different strains of magic should attend. If that applies to you, then I hope to see you there.

Mages was what was used in my world, although it split further depending on a person's magical education as seen by various institutions. Not that it matters here.

( at least his enthusiasm is nice and refreshing, and her curiosity gets the better of her. )

And here I was, thinking that everything related to magic would at least have general guidelines. Is that not the case where you're from? ( do peple not get possessed where you come from, strange?? ) It does; I'm a mage myself.

The magic of my world is a unique case. Any general guidelines are hundreds of years out of date and the new guidelines are currently being rewritten.

[ new guidelines which will probably include "holy shit, plz be careful around the fae, like damn y'all.

but OH YAY, she's a mage, that automatically makes Lavellan somewhat of a cool person in Strange's book. ]

That implies that the laws of magic of your world change, or are at least more readily understood than they were before. I would have thought that something would have been exhaustively studied in any world it was present.

( this is probably what magic club is for, but elera just can't help herself. )

They have. Magic in my world had vanished for hundreds of years. No spell was cast, no magician existed, it was all quite dismal. But since I've returned magic to England, the rules that governed it previously have suddenly come into relevance again.

[ But a scout? Awesome, good to hear! ]

It seems we're coworkers, Miss Lavellan. Both mercenaries and scouts work under the nighrider.

More like no one can agree on the rules and he's left the rest of us to clean up that mess on our own.

[ Okay, sure, he was about to show up in person to harass Strange over something else, but first... this. ]

( well she WAS about to say how that sounded rather impressive, but someone had to rob strange of an ego boost he didn't need. )

So he simply does magic because he can, and leaves everyone else to figure out the rules to what he's done?

[atouts]

In his defense, he did not choose to leave on his own, but he only returned magic itself to England. [ Specifically, the contract the land had with the people of that land, but Strange would know more about that than Childermass would. What he does know, however, is— ] Actual law regarding magic is incredibly out of date and upsetting our very non-magical parliament overall.

[ There's a short pause, then he at least adds, ]

Not that it hasn't been fun to watch, mind you.

I'd help out if I could, you know, [ the peanut gallery pipes up.

granted, his help....might not be the most useful. ]

Finding enjoyment in watching politicians scramble to deal with things they don't understand seems to be a universal constant. At least until they start tossing blame around and decide it should rest with you.

( she knows she has a lot of fun with it, up until that last part. )

So bringing magic back to your land has caused chaos only within your government?

[atouts]

They would have to acknowledge me in the first place, so I think I shall save my worries for my colleagues.

[ Because classism would also be a universal constant. ]

And no, not only with them. It's caused quite a bit of chaos across all of England, though the initial burst did seem to have calm down after a few weeks.

( it sure is. that and fantasy racism. )

Their loss, I'm sure. ( it normally is, in her opinion. ) That is-- unexpected. In my experience, allowing magic to return full force in Thedas would create problems not likely to simply die down.

( if this world has to die and so on. thanks solas. )

Is England the only place where magic returned to? And-- what is it? A continent?

Fewer reports of children enchanting ears to go flying off and slightly more semblance of order is all that truly means. [ Only a semblance. ] Though if England is the only place...

[ It's a good question, one he's been asked before and also one that garners a pause as he considers it. Previously, he'd been asked if Japan might have magic, but honestly? ]

England is the only place English magic returned to. If there is magic elsewhere, I do not know, but we are the ones with a history of it outside of fairy tales. [ Anymore, that is. ] And no, not a continent. An island.

[ Several, but without a map, he's not going to try too had to explain beyond just 'island'. An island is easiest to understand. ]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Strange. ( and she doesn't think one person doing all of that is impossible, because she's a video game protagonist. ) I'm afraid I don't know the details of my assignment beyond the obvious -- who is the nightrider?

That'd be me.

( ugh, she has a boss. she manages to keep that out of her voice, however. )

Do you have another name beyond 'Nightrider', or is that your preferred title?

Lambert. I'll answer to either.

You said you were a mage. You got a specialty?

Lambert, then.

Storm and spirit. I am also a Knight Enchanter, which means I create a sword out of magic.

Sounds handy. Maybe you can show some of that off if you turn up for this 'discussion group.'

How are you with sneaking around?

[ Since she is, well, a scout. That's ostensibly what she's supposed to do... ]

I'm afraid I don't know the details of being a patch. But as for the scout...the carnival travels. It's the job of the mercenaries and scouts to assess the situation ahead of time, be aware of any obstacles that might hamper our trips and performances, and remove the obstacles if necessary.

( so basically fetch quests, only with less fetching and more beating up people. she can do that, she's done that before. )

Sounds almost like home, only without the squabbling shemlen nobles to make it more difficult than it seems. And this -- magic club. It will meet regularly after this?

If people want. Truth be told, I'm playing the entire thing by ear.

( yeah ok, that part seems legit. she does the same. )

It might be useful. Continued magical education is one thing every magic user in my world can agree upon; it wouldn't do to just start and stop it over the course of months.

Precisely. There's only so much we can do with the year long contracts of the carnival, but even the start of an education can make a world of difference—especially when one doesn't have the opportunity back in their own world.
