Now I can't get her out of there -- and before you ask, yes, I tried putting her back in the ball, and then she tried stepping on my head. Obviously, I'm just a little concerned why my horse has decided to try and hatch whatever this is-- [ He breaks off midway, yelling away from the radio. ]

Hey! Baker! I told you to leave that alone!

Besides, even if that was true they do come from eggs, there aren't any Pokemon like Pig around here.

Tch. [She's going to keep explaining despite his being SO RUDE, because, uh. Well. She likes showing off how smart she is too much to not keep going.] We weren't in Alola long enough for me to get too deep into the specifics, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't matter. They breed between species all the time... all it would take is another Pokemon that shares something called an "egg group" with her. And there's probably more Pokemon around that fit that requirement than you realize.

None of that makes any sense. You know that, right?

[ Lambert scoffs. ]

The only other Pokemon she's around with is Baker. You telling me a horse and a dog can have an egg?

[Peridot sighs impatiently. TIME TO EXPLAIN THIS LIKE SHE'S TALKING TO A COMPLETE IDIOT.]

What I'm telling you? Is that it's not outside the realm of possibility. What you have there isn't a "horse", and Baker isn't a "dog" as you keep colloquially referring to the both of them. Pig is a mudsdale. Baker is an arcanine. They may share some superficial similarities to the earth creatures that you're familiar with, but in order to truly understand your Pokemon, you have to understand that they are something entirely different. I mean think about it, do dogs typically breath fire where you come from?

Fine, Miss Know-it-all, let's say you're right, and this is egg is a Pokemon. Do you have any idea how long it's going to take before it hatches?

By itself? I have no idea. Everything I heard at the trainer school had to do with getting it to hatch by carting it around, and then that was based on distance rather than time, for some absurd reason. Either way, I think it tends to vary based on the species of the mother.

[ Were this in person, she'd be getting a blank stare; as it is, there's a bit of a pause while he digests that before he manages to say, incredulously: ]

You had to carry these around to hatch them? She won't even let me touch it!

[Long pause.]

...Nyeh. Maybe you just haven't trained her well enough? I never got to finish the unit about Pokemon breeding, I don't know what else to tell you!

Hot springs!

I overheard someone who was saying there were these smaller islands with hot springs where they could leave eggs.

What? I've never heard of this... How does that not just boil or drown the egg?

No idea! I think the pelago's some kind of established-trainers-only kind of thing. They probably have somewhere warm to put them, and the humidity helps.

[No they literally just leave eggs in hot water and they hatch. Pokemon!]

Hmmm... Interesting. If I remember correctly, we do have some hot springs here within the bounds of the carnival. Whether or not those would work just as well, though... Ehhgh. There's no good way of knowing for certain...

They aren't anything alike. You can't possibly tell me they could have an egg together.

Um, yes. They could. And before either of you ask: If you're expecting me to have some sort of explanation of the biology behind that, don't get your hopes up. Even the natives of that universe didn't seem to have the slightest clue, beyond the vague assertion that Pokemon don't copulate to reproduce the same way that you humans do.

[There's a bit of a shudder in her voice at that last bit. Bbbbuh. Pregnancy. Blech.]

[ To be honest, that's actually kind of a relief, can you imagine it otherwise? Because Childermass certainly doesn't want to. It's one of the most awkward thoughts that's crossed his mind lately and that's saying a lot right now. ]

So what you're telling me is even the people of Alola don't know how they get the very creatures their entire society revolves around? That doesn't make a lick of sense.

I don't know if you missed the memo somehow, but pretty much that entire world didn't make any sense. There are things that some of those Pokemon are capable of that defy the very laws of physics themselves.

But that not a single soul in all of that world can figure out how the animals there exist in the first place is by far a step beyond even that. I know there was no magic there, so it can't be that, either.

I don't think it's so much that they don't know how the Pokemon exist as it is that no one has ever seen where the eggs come from. They just kind of show up at the daycare centers, allegedly.
